Stop Bill 2309...end of mail delivery to your door

You read that right. A proposal in Congress would end door-to-door mailbox delivery service for 90 percent of American households and businesses that now receive it. H.R. 2309, a bill that is headed for a vote in the full House of Representatives, calls for the dismantling of the U.S. Postal Service, one of America’s oldest and most beloved institutions that has served the nation for more than 235 years as provided by the U.S. Constitution.

An important message from the NALC e-Activist Network

A majority of representatives in the House has co-sponsored H.R. 1351, thanks to your hard work and dedication. Reaching this majority was a direct result of the lobby visits, rallies and media coverage you have generated since this legislation was introduced. However, our fight is far from over, and we must keep up the momentum. It is time to take our message back to the American people and show Congress that the public stands with us on saving Saturday delivery. Over the next several weeks, the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, the "super committee," will produce a plan to reduce the federal deficit.
It may include a package of proposals to fix the financial difficulties facing the USPS. Among the proposals they will consider is President Obama's proposal to allow the USPS to reduce the number of delivery days from six to five. At the National Rap Session in Las Vegas last weekend, I announced the next phase of the "Save America's Postal Service" campaign: a national petition drive urging Congress to preserve six-day delivery. Through this petition drive, we will build support among the American public and continue to let Congress know that six-day delivery is crucial to the future of the Postal Service. The only way we will be successful is if every NALC member does his or her part.
Every NALC branch is charged with collecting 10 times its membership size in signatures. Your role as an NALC activist will be critical to achieving your branch's goal. Completed petitions should be mailed to NALC's Department of Legislative and Political Affairs and arrive before Monday, Nov. 14. Click the following links to download the petition and other relevant materials:
Click here for a fact sheet on H.R. 1351:
We will send members of Congress the petitions from their districts. On the Save America's Postal Service website, we will list the total number of signatures gathered by each branch. Please work with your branch president and organize at least one signature-gathering event each week between now and the Nov. 14 deadline. Your participation is needed to mobilize NALC members, activists and community allies.
For more information, please click here to visit the "Save America's Postal Service" website:
Together we are stronger, and with your help, we can continue to deliver for America six days a week.
In Solidarity,
Fredric V. Rolando, President
National Association of Letter Carriers

Statement from NALC President Fred Rolando on President Obama’s deficit plan....
Not a Done Deal: NALC vows to oppose 5-day delivery in Obama plan

Return of FERS surplus, other short-term relief a good start—but not enough....
We are encouraged that President Obama is attempting to creatively address the USPS cash crisis through the deficit reduction process and welcome his proposal to return the $6.9 billion postal pension surplus in FERS to the Postal Service as proposed in Rep. Stephen Lynch’s H.R. 1351. But we are very disappointed that the administration opted for a deferral of the next two pre-funding payments ($5.5 billion each) instead of embracing a permanent reform based on the Lynch bill’s recovery of the even larger CSRS surplus. And we deeply regret that the administration has given into pressure from the postmaster general and has proposed to eliminate Saturday mail delivery.

Dear NALC Branch and State Officers, CDLs and Fellow Union Activists:

Issa's anti-union/corporate buddies at the SD Union Tribune are at it again. They just released a second poll Should Congress pass Rep. Issa's bill to end Saturday mail delivery? Of course they are trying to spin this question to gather public support so when they open the poll they want you to click- Yes They do this by stating in the Yes response, it's what has to happen to keep the Postal Service solvent. Which we all know is completely untrue. Please click on the link - Should Congress pass Rep. Issa's bill to end Saturday mail delivery? Vote No, I do not support the proposal. We cannot let Congressman Issa's supporters mislead the public. Please get as many co-workers, friends, and families to vote in this poll.

Help your fellow Brother and Sisters out

In Sweden, IKEA's factory workers are paid $19 per hour and get five weeks of paid vacation every year. In America? Not so much.

IKEA's Swedwood plant in Danville, Virginia is the most dangerous plant in the wood furniture industry -- workers there have suffered more than 1,536 days of lost work due to accidents on the job in a 30-month period. According to the LA Times, IKEA's Danville workers are paid as little as $8 an hour and face racial discrimination from their managers. Workers often find out on Friday night that they'll be forced to work for the entire weekend -- and if they can't make it, they face disciplinary action.

In Sweden, IKEA's factory workers are unionized, which is one reason they receive better wages and have a safer workplace -- but the company is going all out to prevent American workers from receiving those same rights and protections. Please sign the petition to tell IKEA to give its American workers the freedom to organize.
